The challenge
A very old building, only 55% occupied by the standard retail chains and struggling in the tough market climate.

We started by listening, understanding and collaborating
We took the time to understand the needs of the community, the objectives of the Local Authority, the desires of tenants, and restrictions of the Planning Office. Then started discussions with a suitable architect experienced in listed buildings.

The Vaults.
Seen as a disregarded space in the basement and used as a dumping ground, we saw the opportunity to restore this characterful area to a beautiful and atmospheric space.

Cinema
We came up with a clever way to integrate a 9-screen cinema between two levels of parking to get the most out of our space.

Transforming retail
We collaborated with our existing tenants and brought in new and interesting independents plus a diverse mix of food and beverage units to bring a buzz to our space.

Embedding the community
We all want Bolton Market Place to be the vibrant hub of the community, so any available units or promotion/event sites are offered to local schools and community groups (such as Bolton University and the Octagon theatre) to make use of.

A family day out
Our community wanted more than shops. Installing a 18 hole adventure golf course and Amazonia kids play area makes us a day out for family and drives footfall to our now lively space.

“The centre has evolved from what was overwhelmingly a retail offer through to a mixed social, cultural, dining and entertainment venue. It is a place, I believe, that strongly supports social cohesion, whist encouraging entrepreneurship and creative thinking – in short a microcosm of the changes that need to be brought about not just across Bolton town centre, but in many other towns and cities across the North of England.”
